Uganda is home to the most hospitable people in East Africa, with a number of mixed cultures, there is an amalgamation of cultures and so many inter marriages, from the capital city of the angelic country Kampala you will find that there are so many languages being spoken. Uganda was colonized by the British, their official language is English, secondly is Kiswahili and the commonest mother language spoken in the central region is Luganda. There are four ethnic groups of people in Uganda including the Bantu, Niloctics, Nilo Hamites and Kalenjins.
Cultural experiences begin in Buganda region in Kampala, the kingdom is led by a king Known as the Kabaka, this is on e of the richest cultures of Uganda, they are divided into clans, each of believes in their social totems and customs, these has been displayed on the Kabaka Anjagala road, experience the trueness of the Buganda from the parliament, they traditionally wear “Gomesi”, and “Kanzu”, for traditional ceremonies, the women get married to men and hence belong to their culture including the children, naming is done by the clans people of the child, experiencing the kingdom will take you to the Kasubi royal tombs a place of burial to the Buganda Kingdom Kings. Visit the Idi Amin torture chambers and take a walk through the royal Mile.
Batwa cultural experiences in the south western corner of Bwindi Impenetrable National Park and Mgahinga National Park, they lived within the forest together with other creatures, they are the last group of remaining short structured people pygmy, they were evicted from the forest as a result of conservation purposes, however these continued to live around the surrounding areas of the forest passing on their culture to generations, they will show you through how they used to live in the forest, hunt and gather food, these also will dance and perform their traditional songs. They are lovely people to meet.
Experience the Karamojong community, these are the natives of the northern part of Uganda, a visit to the Kidepo Valley National Park will expose you to the nomadic pastoralists, visiting the I.K community along the Morugule mountains, these will show you through their way of life, the Lorukole community and the Kawalakol community, you will ok yourself into their culture while enjoying their traditional dances and the jumping. The park is bisected into two the Kidepo valley and the Narus Valley along which are a number of animal species.
The Mountain Elgon national park presents the Bagisu and Kalenjin’s, they grow lots of coffee, the practice male circumcision every even year, to enjoy their tradition dancing and to their traditional ceremony, there is always an annual organized ceremony at “Mudodo” grounds, they live along the foot hills of the mountain Elgon, this has the worlds largest foot base, it is home to the famous Sipi falls. Walks through the region will take you to the beautiful Banana and tea plantations.
Visiting the traditional people of Uganda requires to have a maximum respect of culture, for example begin with dress code, avoid wearing skimpy clothes, try to be a bit decent, when taking random pictures without consent of the individuals that you are taking.
